Observatorio Astronómico del Teide
Parque Nacional del Teide

The Teide Astronomical Observatory, located in Teide National Park, is one of the most important centers for solar and astronomical observation on the planet. Managed by the Canary Islands Institute of Astrophysics (IAC), it is situated in the Izaña area, at an altitude of approximately 2,390 meters, where the clean air, low light pollution, and stable climate create exceptional conditions for studying the sky.
The setting is impressive in itself: surrounded by volcanic formations and with Mount Teide dominating the horizon, the observatory appears to float above a sea of clouds. On clear days, the view extends as far as Gran Canaria. Numerous telescopes from international institutions operate there, collaborating on scientific and technological research projects.
Most interestingly, the observatory offers guided tours for the public, by prior reservation, where the fundamentals of solar observation, the instruments used, and the importance of the Canary Islands' skies for global astronomy are explained. It's not a technical experience, but rather an accessible and visual one, perfect for curious minds, families, and space enthusiasts.
The place exudes a special blend of science and nature. Walking among the white domes under an intense blue sky and watching the sun set behind Mount Teide is an unforgettable experience. Furthermore, the area organizes nighttime observation activities, ideal for understanding why Tenerife is an international leader in astrotourism.
If you're interested in the sky, science, or simply unique views, you'll love the Teide Observatory: there aren't many places in the world where stargazing feels so natural and so intimate.

Where to eat
La Ventita de Cholucas
Arriving at La Ventita de Cholucas in Fasnia is part of the experience. It's located on a farm surrounded by nature, with animals, large trees, and a carefully curated rural atmosphere. It's a family-run, peaceful, and authentic place where you can relax without rushing and the surroundings are as important as the food. Here, you come to disconnect, share a meal, and enjoy the scenery.
What to see
Minas de San José
When you arrive at the San José Mines, you feel like you've landed on another planet. The reddish soil, ochre tones, and volcanic formations create an almost Martian landscape that changes with the light every minute. It's one of those places near Mount Teide where you'll find yourself stopping to take photos without even realizing it, but beyond the striking image, you also perceive the geological force that defines this part of the island.
Activities
Área Recreativa de Chanajiga
If you prefer the more authentic, lush forest of the north, Chanajiga offers an atmosphere unlike any other picnic area on the island. Here, the forest takes center stage: tall pines, frequent mist, and a constant feeling of coolness. It's a popular spot for spending the day with barbecues and picnics, but also serves as a starting point for trails that delve into one of Tenerife's greenest and most rugged areas.

Shopping
Las Llanadas
If you enjoy discovering local products directly from their source, this small artisanal cheese factory in Los Realejos is one of those places where cheese is still made the traditional way. They work primarily with goat's milk and produce fresh, semi-cured, and smoked cheeses, as well as ricotta and other dairy products. It's a place closely linked to the primary sector of northern Tenerife, where the authentic flavor of Canarian cheese takes center stage.
Sports
Parque Sostenible de Los Trazos
The Los Trazos Sustainable Park in La Orotava is not your typical flat, grassy urban park. Here, everything revolves around sustainability and the island's natural landscape. It features sloping paths, viewpoints, sports areas, calisthenics equipment, and gardens with native Canarian flora. It's a very pleasant place to walk, sit for a while, or simply unwind, all within one of La Orotava's most peaceful residential areas.
Trekking
Ruta del Trillo
The Threshing Route, in La Zarza (Fasnia), is a circular ethnographic trail that pays homage to cereal farming and the small farmers who worked these lands in difficult times. A peaceful walk among threshing floors, traditional terraces, and open mid-altitude landscapes, it's ideal for discovering the agricultural past of southeastern Tenerife.
