Titolo 4
Edificio los Ficus
Mesa del Mar

When you arrive at the Los Ficus Building, you realize it's not just any apartment block: the road that climbs up or down to the coast passes directly above its residences. It was conceived this way in the 1960s to address the challenging terrain of the Mesa del Mar area while simultaneously providing housing in the municipality of Tacoronte. The building houses around 60 apartments, and its roof-roadway is an urban planning innovation that stands out today for its uniqueness.
The surrounding area makes it even more peculiar. Located in a rugged landscape, building both housing and a road simultaneously required ingenuity. The upper-floor apartments have sloping roofs, adapted to the road's contours, which already hints at the building's distinctive nature. Some residents have mentioned feeling vibrations or hearing noise when buses or heavy vehicles pass by, further highlighting the unusual design.
This building is remarkable for combining two functions: residential living and transportation infrastructure. This duality is unusual and makes the Los Ficus Building a worthwhile stop, even if just for a brief pause on your Tenerife itinerary. It wasn't conceived as a tourist attraction, but its unique character makes it an architectural curiosity that can add a distinctive touch to your visit.
In short: you'll love the Los Ficus Building if you're interested in unusual architecture, the island's urban planning challenges, and those hidden gems not found in every guidebook. It's part of Tenerife's more functional side, where housing and public services are adapted to the terrain and the sea.
