Mesa del Mar

Tacoronte

Descending to Mesa del Mar is an experience in itself. The road winds through hillsides until it reaches this small coastal enclave in northern Tenerife, protected by high cliffs that isolate it from the noise and frenetic pace of the island. The moment you arrive, you feel the atmosphere change: the sound of the sea dominates, and time seems to slow down.

The place combines several facets in a small space. On one side, there are the natural pools, integrated directly into the volcanic coastline, where the Atlantic water flows in and is constantly renewed. They are comfortable for swimming and allow you to enjoy the sea even when the waves are rough. A few steps away, you'll find the small beach of pebbles and dark sand, simple and unpretentious, perfect for those seeking a peaceful swim with magnificent views of Mount Teide.

Mesa del Mar retains the feel of an old fishing village, which is still evident in the surroundings and the way of life. You'll see locals strolling, people sitting gazing at the horizon, and families who have returned generation after generation. This isn't a place for grand plans or showing off: you come here to disconnect, breathe in the sea air, and enjoy the landscape as it is.

What I love most is the feeling of refuge. The cliffs enclose the space and create an intimate, almost hidden atmosphere, making the sea feel closer and more powerful. If you're looking to discover a different, more local, and less developed coastline, Mesa del Mar is one of those places where simply being there is enough.

Where to eat

Sora Kai

If you come to Sora Kai in El Sauzal, it's primarily for the views and the excellent Japanese food. You sit on their open terraces facing the sea and Mount Teide, enjoying a relaxed atmosphere that makes the sunset seem to last longer. Here, Japanese cuisine has a modern twist, the service is friendly and professional, and the overall feeling is that of a place to linger, chatting over a drink and some sushi.

What to see

Parque Natural El Montillo

El Montillo Natural Park in La Matanza de Acentejo is a vast green space where you can enjoy the fresh air without leaving the city. It's a complete park, with children's play areas, a café, lakes with waterfalls, picnic areas, viewpoints, a dog park, a beach soccer field, a climbing wall, and a skate park, all surrounded by lush vegetation and tranquility—ideal for a unique day out.

Activities

Forestal Park Tenerife

An adventure awaits you among the trees at Forestal Park Tenerife: enormous zip lines, suspension bridges, and climbing nets in the heart of the Las Lagunetas pine forest. It's perfect if you want to disconnect from the beach, breathe fresh air, and get your adrenaline pumping with family or friends.

Beaches

Playa la Arena

When you arrive at La Arena Beach in Tacoronte, the first thing you notice is its black volcanic sand and the sea, which seems calmer thanks to the natural shelter of the cliff. It has a boardwalk, occasional shade under tamarind trees, and that authentic northern Tenerife feel. Ideal for a day at the beach with a difference: sun, sea, and nature without the hustle and bustle.

Nightlife
Shopping

Mercadillo del Agricultor Tacoronte

If you come to this town and crave authentic local flavors, the Tacoronte Farmers' Market is my go-to spot. It's a traditional farmers' market where the producers themselves sell fruits, vegetables, cheeses, honey, breads, and family wines directly from their farms to you—no middlemen—all fresh and in season. The atmosphere is lively and genuine, perfect for picking up products that truly make a difference in taste.

Sports
Trekking

El Sauzal - Fuente del Pino

The route connecting El Sauzal with Fuente del Pino in La Matanza is a local trail, ideal for enjoying the tranquility of northern Tenerife. It runs through vineyards, ravines, and small rural roads, with views of the sea and Mount Teide. It's a relatively simple but charming route that combines nature and tradition, as the fountain was historically a meeting place for shepherds and neighbors.
