If you want to discover a part of southern Tenerife, close to the tourist area but still retaining a rural character, the Tejina Mountain circular route is a very interesting hike. The most common route is around 13 kilometers and completely encircles this large volcanic dome located in the municipality of Guía de Isora, a geological formation that rises to over 1,050 meters and originated more than two million years ago during the same volcanic period that formed Las Cañadas del Teide.

The trail begins in the village of Tejina de Isora and quickly starts to climb along well-marked rural roads and PR trails. As you progress, you circle the mountain amidst volcanic terrain, old agricultural terraces, and small, scattered hamlets. It's a very open landscape, dominated by ravines, arid slopes, and sweeping views over the southwest of the island.

Along the route, several traditional elements appear that recall the agricultural history of this area: threshing floors where grain was threshed, the remains of an old wine press, a small hermitage, and paths that were used for centuries by the Guanches in their daily lives. All of this gives the hike a very authentic character, more connected to the human landscape of the south than to the island's large tourist areas.

The highest point of the route is around 1,060 meters, and from that height, the landscape opens up considerably. On clear days, you can see much of Tenerife's southern ridge and several ravines that descend towards the coast. Tejina Mountain itself, with its eroded walls and massive shape, dominates much of the horizon during the hike.

It is a relatively accessible route in terms of technical difficulty, although the accumulated elevation gain is around 600 meters, and it usually takes about five hours to complete at a leisurely pace. Since there is practically no shade, many hikers prefer to do it on cloudy days or in the early morning.

What makes this circular route special isn't any one specific point, but the whole experience: volcanic landscape, rural heritage, deep ravines, and open panoramas that accompany almost the entire journey. It's a very comprehensive hike for understanding how nature and tradition intertwine in southern Tenerife, allowing you to follow in the footsteps of our ancestors.
