Chirche

Guia de Isora

Chirche is one of those villages that seem frozen in time, tucked away among the sun-drenched slopes of Guía de Isora, in the southwestern midlands of Tenerife. This small hamlet, with volcanic stone houses, gabled roofs, and cobblestone alleys, is an almost intact example of traditional Canarian architecture and the rural way of life of bygone centuries. There's no rush here. Every corner invites you to walk slowly and look closely.

Chirche's history is palpable in its old bread ovens, threshing floors, and cisterns that collected rainwater. Many of these elements have been lovingly restored to preserve their essence, and the entire village has been declared a Site of Cultural Interest for its ethnographic value. Visiting it is like stepping into a living postcard of the island's past.

In addition to its rich heritage, Chirche offers something you can't buy: spectacular views of the ocean, the Tágara ravine, and, on clear days, the islands of La Gomera and El Hierro. The sunsets here are unforgettable. It's also a popular stopover for hikers, with trails that pass through abandoned farmland, pine forests, and volcanic landscapes.

Once a year, during the "Day of Traditions," Chirche comes alive with demonstrations of ancient crafts, traditional foods, and a festive atmosphere. But even without celebrations, the town has a peaceful, deep charm that captivates those who let themselves be carried away.

Chirche is perfect for a serene getaway, a hike steeped in history, or simply sitting on a rock, gazing at the horizon, and feeling that time can slow down if you wish.

Where to eat

Berry’s

If you're strolling along the Los Gigantes harbor and fancy a proper ice cream, this is the place to stop. At Berry's, you'll immediately notice it's not your typical tourist ice cream: meticulously crafted flavors, a creamy texture, and combinations that are anything but ordinary. Order one, sit near the sea, and savor it at your leisure, enjoying the tranquil atmosphere of this area.

What to see

Centro De Visitantes e Interpretacion Volcan Chinyero

The Chinyero Volcano Center, in Santiago del Teide, is an interpretive space dedicated to the last volcano to erupt in Tenerife in 1909. It features multimedia exhibits, information panels, topics on volcanism, local flora, nearby trails, and occasional talks. What makes it special is that I learn not only the scientific facts but also the human stories surrounding the volcano, all in an accessible, free, and conveniently located building.

Activities

Avistamiento de Aves Los Gigantes

The Los Gigantes Cliffs are a spectacular place to observe seabirds and birds of prey in Tenerife. From here, you can see species such as the osprey, the falcon, and the raven, which nest on the cliffs. The vertical walls that drop to the sea, the rocky coastal areas, and the proximity to the ocean make it an ideal natural viewpoint for those who love nature, the wind, and open skies.

Beaches

Piscina Natural Acantilados de los Gigantes

The Los Gigantes natural pool is a hidden spot among volcanic rocks, where you can swim with direct views of the imposing cliffs that give the area its name. Protected from the waves, it offers crystal-clear waters and a peaceful atmosphere, ideal for relaxing after a day at the beach or hiking. Just a few meters from the port, it combines natural charm with the convenience of bars and restaurants nearby, all against the spectacular backdrop of the Atlantic.

Nightlife
Shopping

Quesería Artesanal Montesdeoca

Quesería Artesanal Montesdeoca is a family business founded in 1984 that produces artisanal goat, sheep, and cow cheeses in Adeje, Tenerife. With three generations at its helm, it has accumulated more than 70 awards—four times best cheese in Tenerife—and offers guided tours and tastings at its farm. It combines tradition, innovation, and quality in every bite.

Sports

Street Workout

Training at the Playa San Juan Street Workout park is special because of its surroundings. Located right on the seafront, next to the promenade, the park offers direct views of the ocean and La Gomera while you work out, all within the tranquil atmosphere typical of this area in southwest Tenerife. The facility has everything you need for calisthenics and functional training, but what truly sets it apart is the location and the relaxed ambiance.

Trekking

Montaña Tejina

If you enjoy less crowded hiking in southern Tenerife, this circular route around Montaña de Tejina is a very complete option. You'll walk approximately 13 km around this large volcanic crag, over a thousand meters high, which was a sacred site and key center of social interaction for the Guanches. The route passes through ravines, ancient threshing floors, small hermitages, and traditional agricultural remains. There's hardly any shade, but in return, you'll have open panoramic views for much of the way and a constant sense of a rural, volcanic, and mystical landscape.
