The route through the Ifara Mountain and Los Riscos Natural Monument is one of those hikes that proves southern Tenerife is much more than beaches and tourist areas. Here, the undisputed star is the volcanic landscape, formed by ancient cones, lava flows, and large escarpments sculpted over thousands of years by erosion and wind.
The protected area covers a large area between the municipalities of Granadilla de Abona and Arico and preserves one of the best examples of recent volcanism in the south of the island. During the hike, you'll walk along trails that cross extensive spurge and cardon cactus thickets, an ecosystem perfectly adapted to the dry climate of this part of Tenerife. Vegetation isn't abundant, but precisely this absence of large trees allows for continuous panoramic views over the midlands, the coast, and, on the clearest days, a good part of the southern coastline.
One of the most distinctive features of the route is the Ifara and Los Riscos mountains themselves. Its volcanic profiles stand out clearly against the landscape, creating a highly photogenic scene, especially in the early morning or late afternoon light, when the ochre, reddish, and black hues of the volcanic rock intensify. It's a place where it's worth pausing frequently to observe the geological details and enjoy the silence that characterizes this area.
Along the route, you'll also find old terraces, stone walls, and other remnants of the agricultural and livestock activity that coexisted with this volcanic landscape for decades. This combination of natural heritage and traces of the past adds interest to a route that is usually much less crowded than other, more well-known trails on the island.
It's not a route through vast forests or spectacular ravines. Its appeal lies in discovering a more arid, wild, and relatively unexplored Tenerife, where geology dominates the landscape and each section offers a new perspective on one of the best-preserved volcanic areas in the south of the island.

Like the wines, this product can only be found at the San Isidro Farmers Market, at Elsa's stand.
