The Drago Milenario de Icod de los Vinos is undoubtedly one of the most representative natural emblems of Tenerife and the Canary Islands. This impressive tree, whose scientific name is Dracaena draco, stands out for its thick trunk, rounded crown and twisted branches that give it an almost mystical appearance. Although its exact age is difficult to determine, it is estimated that it could be between 800 and 1,000 years old, making it one of the oldest dragon trees in the world.
The dragon tree is located in a specially tended botanical park, with gardens full of typical Canarian flora and paths that allow you to walk through the space comfortably. In addition to the tree, the park offers a small natural cave and rest areas, ideal for those who want to spend some quiet time surrounded by nature. From the park's viewpoint you can enjoy spectacular views of the historic centre of Icod and, on clear days, of the majestic Teide volcano and the Atlantic Ocean.
Visiting the Drago Milenario is much more than just seeing a tree; it is to immerse yourself in the history and culture of Tenerife, as the dragon tree plays an important role in Guanche traditions and in the island's identity. At the end of the visit, it is worth strolling through the centre of Icod de los Vinos, with its cobbled streets, lively squares and a wide range of bars and restaurants where you can sample the local gastronomy.
