Charcas de Erjos

The Charcas de Erjos are one of Tenerife's most unique wetlands, located in the Teno Rural Park, right between the municipalities of Erjos (El Tanque and Los Silos). These ponds originated when, following the exploitation of clayey soil in the 1950s and 1960s, rainfall filled the natural basins left by extraction. Today, they form a freshwater ecosystem surrounded by rushes, Canary Island willows, and reeds, and are a refuge for species such as the common coot, the grey heron, and migratory birds such as the wood pigeon and the turqué.

The most accessible route starts from Erjos square (at approximately 950 m altitude) and follows the PR-TF51 trail—the old Camino Real—to the ponds on a comfortable, easy walk of approximately 2 km. There are also medium-difficulty (10 km) or long (21 km) circular routes that include immersion in Monte del Agua, ascents to Cumbres de Bolico, or the Montaña Gala watchtower.

The surroundings offer an experience for the senses: trails flanked by laurel and pine forests, fresh air and panoramic views, as well as the opportunity to observe birds up close without the need for professional equipment. If it has recently rained, the reflection of the sky and mountains in the water turns the landscape into a living painting.
