Caña y Ron is much more than a distillery: it's a project dedicated to recovering the Canary Islands' agricultural heritage linked to sugarcane cultivation, a fundamental crop in Tenerife since the late 15th century and practically extinct for centuries. The project is located in Icod de los Vinos, in the El Amparo area, a region historically connected to this activity.
The estate allows visitors to experience the entire sugarcane cycle, from planting to processing. During the visit, you'll tour the restored plantation while learning about how sugarcane was cultivated in the Canary Islands, its economic importance after the Conquest, and its role in the trade between Europe, Africa, and the Americas, when the islands were known as the Sugar Islands.
One of the great strengths of the experience is its educational and unhurried approach. There's no rush or artificial spectacle here: you walk among the sugarcane, touch it, taste the juice, and understand the manual labor required for its cultivation. Everything is based on circular economy practices, local production, and sustainability, with a clear commitment to locally sourced products and traceability.
The visit continues in the historic late 19th-century house, a picturesque building that is part of the project and will house the future artisanal distillery. Here, the traditional rum-making process is explained: fermentation of sugarcane juice, use of copper stills, and aging, always adhering to a philosophy of limited, artisanal production, far removed from industrial scale.
Among the activities available at Caña y Ron are: guided tours of the sugarcane plantation with historical explanations about sugar in the Canary Islands and its social and economic impact; a visit to the artisanal distillery and learning about the distillation process; and tastings of sugarcane juice, artisanal rums, and related products, among others.
