In the heart of Teno Rural Park, at an altitude of approximately 770 meters and with only 65 inhabitants, lies Teno Alto, a remote hamlet where the goat cheesemaking tradition still thrives. This is where Alexander López, the young shepherd of the Naturteno cheese factory, lives. He cares for a herd of around 160 goats and makes fresh, semi-cured, and cured cheese using artisanal techniques, earning recognition such as the Great Gold Medal of the Canary Islands for his "Inquieto" cheese.
The experience of visiting these cheese factories is authentic and unique: you can see the goats grazing freely from early morning, how they milk by hand, and how they make cheeses with local raw milk. Alexander aspires to open the cheese factory to the public, sharing his story and passion for a craft threatened by rural depopulation, but which he maintains with pride and dedication.
Teno Alto cheese stands out for its clean, slightly acidic flavor and aroma of volcanic pastures. The smoked semi-cured cheese is especially famous, infused with wood smoke and carefully refined. You can also enjoy traditional dishes such as stewed goat or escaldón accompanied by this cheese in local establishments, in a setting where the air is pure and the views stretch from the cliffs to La Gomera.
In Teno Alto, time seems to have stopped: there's no cell phone service, the road is winding, the constant breeze, and the feeling of isolation turn each visit into a sensory journey. It's not just about eating cheese, but about discovering a rare agri-food heritage, where seeing the entire process—from goat to table—is part of a vivid, sustainable cultural experience deeply connected to the island.
