Parque Natural El Montillo

La Matanza

El Montillo Natural Park is one of those places that surprises me with its size, variety, and meticulous upkeep in the heart of northern Tenerife. Located in La Matanza de Acentejo, it boasts magnificent views and has become a vast urban green lung, covering more than 57,000 square meters, the result of years of dedicated efforts to regenerate the space and create areas for leisure and nature.

From the moment you enter the park, it's clear that no detail has been overlooked: there are distinct areas for all types of visitors. For those with children, the playground is spacious and varied, with swings, zip lines, nets, and games designed for different age groups. Nearby, there are even small pedal boats to navigate an artificial lake with a waterfall, which has become one of the park's most striking features.

If you're planning a day trip, there are several picnic areas and rest stops where you can enjoy a meal or relax with your family, as well as shaded paths through diverse vegetation including dragon trees, palm trees, and an interesting collection of plant species. The park also offers sports facilities: a beach soccer field, a calisthenics area, and a climbing wall for the more adventurous.

In addition, there's a skate park and a pump track for bikes and skateboards, expanding the options for active leisure if you fancy something more than just walking or playing.

The park is designed for you to enjoy alone, as a couple, with friends, with children, or even with your pet, as it also has a designated dog area. Throughout the park, there are benches, viewpoints, and small paths that invite you to stroll and enjoy the tranquility, and from some spots, you can see both the valley and Mount Teide.

El Montillo isn't an isolated wilderness, but rather an urban park with integrated nature, a café, and amenities that make it easy to spend anywhere from a couple of hours to a whole day there, at your own pace, with plenty of different things to do.

Where to eat

Persia Tenerife

If you're looking to try something different in Puerto de la Cruz, this restaurant offers a taste of the Middle East without leaving the historic center. Here you'll find Persian cuisine bursting with intense aromas, where saffron, fresh herbs, yogurt, and nuts define the character of the dishes. I love it because it doesn't try too hard to be a tourist: it invites you to discover authentic Iranian flavors in a warm and relaxed atmosphere.

What to see

Escalera de Agatha Christie

If you love literature, this staircase will bring a smile to your face. Right on the Paseo San Amaro, you'll see steps transformed into the spines of Agatha Christie books, painted in vibrant colors and bearing recognizable titles. It's a tribute to her visit to Tenerife in 1927. When you climb them, you're not just walking; you're traversing a part of her history and her connection to Puerto de la Cruz.

Activities

Forestal Park Tenerife

An adventure awaits you among the trees at Forestal Park Tenerife: enormous zip lines, suspension bridges, and climbing nets in the heart of the Las Lagunetas pine forest. It's perfect if you want to disconnect from the beach, breathe fresh air, and get your adrenaline pumping with family or friends.

Beaches

Playa el Ancón

El Ancón beach in La Orotava welcomes you with its dark volcanic sand and a deep blue sea that shifts with the light. It's a wide beach with lively waves and a natural setting that invites you to stroll, gaze at the horizon, and feel the power of the Atlantic. Ideal if you love authentic, unspoiled beaches with a pristine volcanic landscape.

Nightlife
Shopping

Mercadillo del Agricultor Tacoronte

If you come to this town and crave authentic local flavors, the Tacoronte Farmers' Market is my go-to spot. It's a traditional farmers' market where the producers themselves sell fruits, vegetables, cheeses, honey, breads, and family wines directly from their farms to you—no middlemen—all fresh and in season. The atmosphere is lively and genuine, perfect for picking up products that truly make a difference in taste.

Sports
Trekking

El Sauzal - Fuente del Pino

The route connecting El Sauzal with Fuente del Pino in La Matanza is a local trail, ideal for enjoying the tranquility of northern Tenerife. It runs through vineyards, ravines, and small rural roads, with views of the sea and Mount Teide. It's a relatively simple but charming route that combines nature and tradition, as the fountain was historically a meeting place for shepherds and neighbors.
