Los Carrizales

Parque Rural de Teno

Los Carrizales is a small hamlet nestled among the cliffs of Teno, in the far northwest of Tenerife. It belongs to the municipality of Buenavista del Norte and is divided into two main sections: Carrizal Alto and Carrizal Bajo, connected by a mountain road that offers breathtaking views over the ravines and the ocean.

The surroundings are among the most stunning on the island. The Teno ravines—deep, verdant, and steeply ravaged—encircle the hamlet, isolating it from the outside noise and making a visit a true discovery. The traditional stone houses, small orchards, and the tranquility of the place offer a glimpse into rural life in the most remote areas of Tenerife.

Several trails begin here, the most popular being the one that descends through the Barranco de los Carrizales ravine to the coast, a challenging but spectacular route that crosses volcanic formations and native vegetation before reaching the sea. There are also paths that connect to the Teno massif and its natural viewpoints.

What makes Los Carrizales special is its authenticity: there are no large restaurants or tourist shops, just nature, silence, and a few houses inhabited by locals who keep tradition alive. It's a perfect place for those who want to discover the purest and most secluded side of Tenerife, where every bend in the road offers a new perspective of the landscape.

Visiting Los Carrizales is, in short, a peaceful and genuine experience, a journey to the heart of the wildest Teno region, where nature and history blend seamlessly.

What to see

Paisaje Lunar Teno Alto

The lunar landscape of Teno Alto, practically overshadowed by its "older brother," the lunar landscape of Vilaflor, is one of those places on the island that surprises with its serenity and natural beauty. Surrounded by silence and with sweeping views of the ravines and the ocean, it displays a terrain of light tones and gentle shapes that contrast with the vegetation and crags of the Teno massif. A little-known corner, but full of magic.

Activities

Avistamiento de Aves en Teno Alto

Teno Alto is one of Tenerife's best birdwatching spots. Its rural landscape and nearby cliffs create the perfect habitat for iconic species such as the common kestrel, the Cory's shearwater, and the great grey shrike. Canaries, common buzzards, endemic pigeons, and small forest birds can also be seen on its hills and ravines. It is a peaceful place, ideal for enjoying the flight of birds surrounded by nature.
