Museo de Artesanía Iberoamericana de Tenerife

La Orotava

The Tenerife Ibero-American Crafts Museum (MAIT) is located in La Orotava, in the Santo Domingo Convent (also called San Benito Abad), a historic 17th-18th-century building with architectural elements such as cloisters, arches, stone staircases, and traditional wooden ceilings. It is managed by the Tenerife Island Crafts Company (Empresa Insular de Artesanía) and also acts as a Documentation Center for Crafts from Spain and the Americas.

The museum's purpose is to preserve, display, and disseminate traditional crafts from both Spain and Ibero-American countries, including Canarian crafts. Its permanent collection exceeds 10,000 pieces, including current objects and works no longer in existence, objects of ethnographic value, pieces of folk art, textiles, ceramics, musical instruments, lace, and more.

For years, MAIT has been developing educational activities with schools: guided tours, practical workshops (pottery making, natural dyes, weaving, etc.), educational itineraries, and programs that seek to engage students in traditional crafts so they understand their cultural, technical, and social importance.

Visiting MAIT is an opportunity to enter a space where crafts speak of history, cultural fusion, collective memory, and popular creativity. It's not just about seeing pieces, but also about understanding techniques, listening in silence to the pulse of the communities that made them, seeing everyday life transformed into beauty, and experiencing that craftsmanship is not a relic but a living cultural bridge.

What to see

Centro de Visitantes Telesforo Bravo

The Telesforo Bravo Center, in El Mayorazgo (La Orotava), is my must-see if I want to understand Tenerife: it combines interactive exhibits on flora, fauna, and volcanoes, along with a botanical garden of native species. It's free, accessible, and features panels and visual projections. It's open Tuesday through Sunday, morning and afternoon. Perfect for starting Teide hikes with context, without rushing.

Activities

Corpus Christi

Every year, the cobblestone streets of La Orotava are decorated with flower carpets and volcanic sand during Corpus Christi. The Town Hall Square displays a giant work made with natural Teide soil, while residents lovingly decorate the streets. A blend of tradition, devotion, and creativity transforms the historic center into an open-air museum for a few days.

Beaches

El Bollullo

El Bollullo is a natural gem in the municipality of La Orotava: black volcanic sand, green cliffs, and views of the Atlantic. Access is via a staircase from a small parking lot surrounded by banana trees. The sea is often rough, ideal for surfing or watching the waves from the shore. There's a beach bar where you can enjoy a drink at the end of the day.
