The Barranco del Río Trail, located in the municipality of Arico, is one of the hidden gems of southern Tenerife and one of the most spectacular routes for those seeking direct contact with the island's wildest nature. Despite its name, the ravine only carries water intermittently, but when it does—after rains or during the snowmelt—it reveals its true splendor with small waterfalls, crystal-clear pools, and a constant murmur that accompanies the hiker.

The route begins in the midlands of Arico and gradually enters the ravine bed, surrounded by vertical walls of tufa and volcanic rock that showcase the different geological layers formed over thousands of years. As you progress, the landscape transforms from the arid environment typical of the south to a more humid and cooler microclimate, dotted with native vegetation such as spurge, cardon cactus, and bejeque, and the occasional solitary fig tree clinging to the cracks in the rock.

One of the trail's greatest attractions is its adventurous nature. There are sections where you'll need to use your hands to climb small walls or navigate between stones polished smooth by water. It's a moderately difficult route, recommended for hikers with some experience or a desire to explore off the beaten path.

During the hike, the silence of the ravine is broken only by birdsong and the echo of the wind. At certain points, the riverbed widens, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the valley and the ocean beyond. Those with a keen eye can discover remnants of ancient water channels and natural caves that serve as reminders of how the area's inhabitants, centuries ago, harnessed the resources of their surroundings.

The Barranco del Río is an experience unlike any other in southern Tenerife: wild, silent, and profoundly authentic. It's the kind of trail you don't just walk, you experience, leaving visitors with the feeling of having discovered one of those places that nature still keeps secret.

What to see

Arco de Tajao

The Tajao Arch, also known as the Bijagua Arch, is a natural volcanic formation located on the southeast coast of Tenerife, in San Miguel de Tajao (Arico). This rock bridge, sculpted by erosion on volcanic tuff, stands out for its clean lines and its arid surroundings of cardon cacti and tabaiba plants, offering one of the most unique and accessible geological landscapes on the island's southern coast.

Activities

Cancha de Bola Canaria La Jaca

The La Jaca Bola Canarian Court is one of the liveliest spots in the small coastal town of Arico. Here, locals and visitors gather to play this traditional Canarian game in a relaxed, family-friendly atmosphere. It's not just a sports venue, but also a social space: a place where generations mingle, stories are shared, and a deeply rooted custom in the towns of southern Tenerife is kept alive.

Beaches

Cuevas del Trigo

Cuevas del Trigo beach is one of those wild corners of southern Tenerife where you'll feel the island remains untouched. A secluded stretch of volcanic coastline, with natural caves carved into the rock and a tranquil atmosphere, it's ideal for disconnecting, taking leisurely strolls, and listening only to the sea and the wind.

Miel Tament

Tament, which means "honey" in the Amazigh language, is an artisanal gem produced on the same estate that makes Nevales de Abona wine, using Canarian black bees. It is multifloral, pure, and deep golden in color, with a smooth texture and balanced sweetness. Although it doesn't have an official organic seal, it is produced using sustainable and traditional methods. Like the wines, this product can only be found at the San Isidro Farmers Market, at Elsa's stand.
