The wreck "El Peñón" in Tabaiba is one of the most attractive diving spots in northern Tenerife and an example of how a sunken ship can be transformed into a home to marine biodiversity. Originally a tugboat, the ship was sunk in 2006 close to the coast to serve as an artificial reef. It now lies tilted about 30° to starboard, at a maximum depth of around 30-32 meters, and just a few dozen meters from the shore.
Access is from the shore via stone stairs, making it easy to enter the water. The upper part of the wreck (the deck) is accessible even to Open Water divers, although exploring the entire interior or the engine room requires advanced certification and wreck experience.
The underwater environment surrounds the wreck with a mosaic of marine life: moray eels and octopuses hide among its hatches and rusty structures; around it, schools of squid, horse mackerel, and squid abound. You can also see trumpetfish, sardines, some amberjacks, and even rays. Visibility is usually good, between 20 and 30 meters depending on conditions.
El Peñón is not a site for unsupervised beginners, as the depth and interior penetrations involve risks. However, its combination of artificial structure, proximity to the coast, variety of marine life, and relative accessibility makes it ideal for intermediate-advanced divers.
Visiting El Peñón allows you to experience a variety of diving: exploring a partially dismantled wreck, walking along its deck, observing wildlife hidden within, and enjoying the sensation of diving into a structure that seems to tell ancient stories. For those who love diving with a cultural and biological background, this site is a must; it is also open most of the year.
