Titolo 4
Refugio de los Animales K9
Las Chafiras

K9 Animal Sanctuary is a long-standing shelter in southern Tenerife, founded in 1993. It works with volunteers to rescue dogs and cats from situations of abandonment, abuse, or neglect. It does not receive government subsidies, which means that every meal, every spay/neuter, and every adoption depend on community commitment: donations, sponsors, and volunteers. This community spirit makes it very special.
The shelter is located near Las Chafiras/San Miguel, in kennels that comfortably accommodate 55-60 dogs, although it often houses more. It also has a cat and kitten shelter, with indoor and outdoor spaces, so the felines can move, play, and recover while they wait for their forever homes. The animals receive medical and social care, and some are trained by volunteers to walk, helping them stay active and improve their physical and emotional well-being.
Another distinguishing feature is that K9 offers the public the opportunity to visit, walk dogs under supervision, and experience firsthand the work of caring for, rehabilitating, and socializing animals. It's not simply a shelter you arrive at and see cages: interaction is an important part of having a living shelter. They also promote responsible adoptions, ensuring that animals go to loving homes, and, when this isn't possible, they allow sponsorships or donations to cover veterinary and maintenance costs.
The organization relies entirely on charity: charity shops, flea markets, events, and the collection of donated materials all contribute to sustaining its expenses. Their humane approach and commitment to the mission distinguish them—volunteers who dedicate their time, animals who improve their condition, and homes that are found—which leaves a very positive impression on those who visit.
K9 is not just a rescue center, but a space for hope and community action in Tenerife: ideal for people who want to connect with social causes, learn about animal care, volunteer, provide resources, or simply meet and share positive energy with animals waiting for a second chance.

What to see
La Hoya
The hamlet of La Hoya, in San Miguel de Abona, is one of those places that helps you understand what life was like in southern Tenerife before tourism. Declared a Site of Cultural Interest as an Ethnological Site, it preserves traditional architecture, historic paths, water sources, and agricultural terraces in a rural setting that has changed very little over time.
Activities
Tunolandia Canarias
This is a distinctive plan on the island of Tenerife across all the playa and hotels, Tunolandia is one of these curiosities that are so popular. In the Valle de San Lorenzo, this space consists of a variety of tuneras, gastronomy, tradition and products based on high pico. Aquí puedes pasear entre cactus gigantes, probar mermeladas, licores o mojo de tuno y descubrir una cara mucho más rural y diferente del sur de la isla.
Nightlife
Roca Blanca
This beach club, located right on the seafront in one of the quietest areas of Los Cristianos, is ideal for enjoying a leisurely cocktail and stretching out the afternoon until sunset. It features a terrace with tables, a swimming pool, and Balinese beds, which should be reserved in advance. The atmosphere is relaxed, with music and a DJ, perfect for quiet get-togethers with friends or even for working from home with ocean views. It's not a place for formal dining, but rather for savoring the experience, the friendly service, and the sunset as the main attraction.
Shopping
Miel Tament
Tament, which means "honey" in the Amazigh language, is an artisanal gem produced on the same estate that makes Nevales de Abona wine, using Canarian black bees. It is multifloral, pure, and deep golden in color, with a smooth texture and balanced sweetness. Although it doesn't have an official organic seal, it is produced using sustainable and traditional methods. Like the wines, this product can only be found at the San Isidro Farmers Market, at Elsa's stand.
Sports
Parque de Calistenia
The Calistenia Park of Vilaflor also has many sports areas in Tenerife that can be used for: climbing the mountains and clear air at more than 1,400 meters in altitude. The installation is very easy, with the basics for a good routine of street workout, but the verdadero is attractive in the exercise. Aquí entrenas entre pinares y tranquilidad absolutea, en uno de los pueblos más altos de España y muy lejos del ambience urbano habitualo.
Trekking
Sendero Montaña Roja
Walking the circular route that starts in El Médano and heads toward Montaña Roja is like stepping into an otherworldly volcanic landscape: reddish sand, deep blue sea, and the wind that caresses you with every step. You can see World War II bunkers, aquatic birds, and panoramic views of the southern part of the island. You'll love it if you're looking for an easy hike with that "reconnect with nature" feel in southern Tenerife.
