Ermita de Nuestra Señora del Rosario
Machado

Visiting the Hermitage of Our Lady of the Rosary, in the heart of Machado, is to experience one of the most historically and symbolically significant places in northeastern Tenerife. Located at an altitude of approximately 550 meters, this small hermitage is remarkable not for its size, but for all that it represents. It is one of the oldest churches on the island, with a construction believed to predate the 1530s, in the early years following the conquest.
The location was not chosen at random. The hermitage stands beside a section of the old road that connected San Cristóbal de La Laguna with Candelaria, a vital route for centuries. Pilgrims, travelers, and processions carrying the image of the Virgin of Candelaria to La Laguna passed this way. For this reason, this site was for a long time a place of rest, contemplation, and reflection.
Today, in addition to its historical value, the hermitage serves as a stunning viewpoint. From its vantage point, one enjoys open views over the rural landscape of the municipality of El Rosario, with a sense of tranquility rarely found elsewhere on the island. This combination of height, silence, and expansive vistas makes the place inviting, one to linger a few minutes longer, simply observing.
The hermitage, along with the nearby Casa de los Mesa—linked to Amaro Pargo—and the old road, forms part of a complex declared a Site of Cultural Interest as a Historic Site. Machado keeps this heritage alive during its patron saint festivities, dedicated to Our Lady of the Rosary between September and October, reinforcing the connection between the site, its history, and the identity of the municipality.
