Roques de Garcia

Parque Nacional del Teide

The Roques de García are a collection of impressive rock formations located in the heart of Teide National Park, within the ancient Las Cañadas crater. Their distinctive appearance, with twisted shapes and impossible profiles, has made them one of Tenerife's most iconic landscapes and one of the most photographed images in the Canary Islands.

These structures originated from the accumulation of volcanic and sedimentary materials over millions of years, and from subsequent erosion caused by wind, water, and the high-altitude temperature variations. The result is a veritable open-air geological museum, where each rock tells a different story of the island's volcanic origins.

Among the best known are Roque Cinchado, famous for its narrow shape and seemingly precarious balance—so much so that it was featured on the old 1,000-peseta banknote—La Catedral, a large rocky spire that rises like a natural wall, and El Torrotito, with its superimposed layers of different hues, evidence of various eruptions.

The rock formation rises above the Llano de Ucanca, a plain that was once a large volcanic caldera and now offers one of the most breathtaking panoramic views of Mount Teide. The combination of reddish, ochre, and gray tones, along with the clear skies above the peaks, creates a spectacular contrast, especially at dawn and dusk, when the light highlights the reliefs and textures of the rocks.

More than just a point of interest, the Roques de García are a symbol of Tenerife's natural identity: the visible imprint of the island's volcanic origin and a perfect example of the power of time and nature.
