Garachico
Garachico

Garachico, founded in the 15th century by the Genoese Cristóbal de Ponte, was for centuries Tenerife's main port, exporting wine and sugar to America and Europe. In 1706, the eruption of the Trevejo volcano buried its port and destroyed much of the historic center. However, the town rose again and today proudly preserves its Renaissance and Classical Baroque splendor.
The historic center, declared a Site of Cultural Interest and awarded the Gold Medal for Merit in Fine Arts, is a charming labyrinth of plazas, Canarian balconies, interior courtyards, and 16th- and 17th-century facades. The Plaza de la Libertad is the heart of the town, surrounded by palm trees, charming cafes, and buildings such as the town hall and the Church of Santa Ana, rebuilt after the lava flow with a Mudejar coffered ceiling and Baroque chapels that invite silence and contemplation.
Nearby stands the Convent of San Francisco, now a cultural center with courtyards that retain their original wooden balconies and a church that reflects the town's religious past. A short distance away, the Castle of San Miguel, built in the 16th century and a survivor of the eruption, offers views over the Caletón natural pools, created by the lava that solidified upon reaching the Atlantic.
A walk along the coast reveals these volcanic pools: saltwater pools that invite you to swim when the sea is calm, surrounded by black rock and waves that crash powerfully or leave a beautiful silence at sunset. From the Mirador del Emigrante, you can also contemplate the town's skyline and the ocean, commemorating the diaspora of its inhabitants to America.
Every five years, Garachico celebrates the Lustral Festival in honor of Christ of Mercy, with floats, paper flowers, and processions that recreate his resilience in the face of volcanic adversity. Every corner of the town speaks of recovery: a human landscape that combines lightness, beauty, and history.
Today, Garachico is one of the Most Beautiful Villages in Spain: ideal for those seeking tranquility, heritage, the sea, and traditional architecture. A place where every stone seems to tell a story and where the past is experienced without relinquishing the present.
