La casa de los balcones
La Orotava

The Casa de los Balcones, also known as the Méndez-Fonseca House, is one of Tenerife's most iconic buildings. Built in 1632, it stands out for its elegant three-story façade, decorated with wrought-iron balconies and, above, a spectacular continuous balcony made of tea (Canary Island pine) wood, carved with a surprising level of detail.
Passing through its large wooden gate, you enter a traditional L-shaped Canarian patio with wooden columns and galleries, lush vegetation, and an old wine press that is still preserved. This central space serves as the heart of the house and connects to various living rooms and bedrooms.
Today, the house functions as a museum and craft center. Here you can discover the art of Canarian calado (lacework), a delicate embroidery technique passed down from generation to generation. You can also see basketry, ceramics, and other traditional arts. On the upper floor, there is a faithful recreation of a period home: rooms decorated with antique furniture, a stately dining room, a traditional kitchen, and everyday objects from the 19th century.
A visit to the Casa de los Balcones is like immersing yourself in the history and customs of the island. It is one of those places where time seems to stand still, ideal for lovers of traditional Canarian culture and architecture.
