Malpais de Guimar

The Malpaís de Güímar is one of Tenerife's most unique natural gems, declared a nature reserve to protect its volcanic ecosystem and biodiversity. This area was formed thousands of years ago after the eruption of the Montaña Grande volcano, which left behind a vast lava field that reached the sea. The result is a spectacular, arid landscape, where the shapes of the basaltic rock combine with the intense green of tabaibas, cardones, and other plants adapted to the scarcity of water.

The network of trails that cross the malpaís allows you to explore both the interior, with views of the volcanic cone and its slopes, and the coastal strip, where the waves crash forcefully against the black rocks. Along the way, it is common to spot birds such as the hoopoe and the kestrel, as well as black lizards basking on the hot lava.

Despite its inhospitable appearance, this space is a refuge for life and an example of natural balance in arid areas. Its geological and ecological value makes it an open-air classroom for understanding Tenerife's volcanic formation and the ability of its flora and fauna to adapt to extreme conditions.

The Malpaís de Güímar can be explored in a few hours and is fairly level, but it lacks shade and services, so it is essential to bring water, sunscreen, and comfortable shoes. Visiting at sunrise or sunset enhances the beauty of its colors and offers a more peaceful experience, with only the sound of the sea and the wind as your companions.
