Barranco de Badajoz
Güímar
The Badajoz Ravine, also historically known as Chamoco, is a unique site located in Güímar and considered one of Tenerife's most enigmatic canyons. Nestled in the Las Siete Lomas Protected Landscape, it combines natural beauty with indigenous remains, colonial history, and numerous legends that attract explorers and the curious.
Its archaeological value is reflected in the Cañizo Cave, a cavity located about 100 meters high with wooden beams on its roof, possibly used by the Guanches as a ceremonial burial site or summer refuge. Human remains and mummies have also been found here, linked to ancient funerary practices that speak to the spiritual importance of the site during the Guanche period.
In the 19th century, seven water galleries were excavated along the ravine (more than 14,900 meters in total), intended to supply water for crops in the midlands and along the coast of Güímar. Some of these galleries—such as Acaymo, Chamoco, and El Almagre—are still visible and are part of the history of local engineering.
But what has truly made the ravine famous are its mysterious legends. There are stories of the so-called "beings in white" seen by gallery workers and night tourists, and of the legendary "Pear Girl," who, according to legend, disappeared into the ravine and then returned without having aged, recounting having been guided by luminous figures to an internal cave. These stories have turned the ravine into the so-called "route of fear," frequented by curious onlookers and paranormal enthusiasts.
The approximately 6-km (round trip) trail runs through part of the canyon, alternating easy hiking sections with narrow, winding passages. It allows you to experience the varied local flora, observe remains of traditional hydraulic systems, and breathe in an air that blends ancient history with untamed nature.
Today, it's a perfect enclave for those seeking unique experiences: a stunning volcanic landscape, vibrant Guanche history, rural engineering, and a touch of mystery that turns every step into a small adventure.
