Titolo 4
Sendero Montaña Roja
El Medano

You leave El Médano eager to get moving, and soon you're walking along the trail that runs along the base of Montaña Roja, that 171-meter volcanic cone that rises imposingly by the sea. The route is a gentle loop—approximately 4.7 to 5 km—that combines sea, red rock, dunes, and natural viewpoints, without having to climb anything complicated.
What's most striking is how the surroundings change with every step: we start at sea level, bordering the coast of El Médano, with views of the promenade and the wind blowing the kitesurfers' sails. Then the path approaches the mountain, where the sand turns reddish and you see eroded volcanic formations, a color that's hard to find on other beaches. On the gentle climb to the top of Montaña Roja, the view opens up: on one side the endless blue of the Atlantic, on the other the coastal plain and the island silhouettes in the background.
The route is accessible: you don't need special equipment, just good footwear, water, sunscreen, and a desire to enjoy it. It's not a high-mountain route, but rather a hike immersed in nature, ideal for families or those not looking for an extreme challenge. Furthermore, since it's a circular route, you start and finish in El Médano, which means you can integrate it into a day at the beach or a lunch break near the town. Signs are provided, and the route is easy to follow.
The natural setting is its attraction: Montaña Roja is part of a Special Nature Reserve of approximately 166 hectares, where wind-adapted vegetation and scarce water blend with volcanic formations. Don't expect abundant shade here: the sun and wind dominate, so it's best to be well prepared.
For me, what sets this route apart is the combination of proximity (you're in the south of Tenerife, accessible) with spectacular views (that volcano, the sea, the contrast of colors). If you're looking for a hike that doesn't take all day, offers beautiful views, and leaves you wanting another swim or a sunset on the beach, this is a must-see. You'll love it if you want to feel close to nature, walk outdoors, and see Tenerife from a different perspective, with wind, volcanic rocks, and coastal views.

The Cave of Santo Hermano Pedro, in the municipality of Granadilla de Abona, is one of Tenerife's most important pilgrimage sites. The refuge of the first Canarian saint during his youth as a shepherd, the place maintains an atmosphere of contemplation and faith. Today, thousands of people visit it each year to leave offerings, light candles, and ask favors of the saint, making it a place of deep popular devotion.
Activities
Avistamiento de Aves en Montaña Roja
The Montaña Roja Special Nature Reserve, in El Médano, is one of the best places in southern Tenerife for birdwatching. Its semi-arid environment, salt marshes, and coastal areas provide refuge and resting places for numerous migratory species. Kentish plovers, herons, curlews, and sandpipers are common, as well as resident birds such as the trumpeter finch and the stone curlew. It's an ideal place to observe winged wildlife in peace and tranquility.

El Médano is an ideal place to combine beach life with snorkeling. Its clean, shallow waters allow you to observe local fish and small schools of marine life, all in a relaxing environment with views of Montaña Roja. Between rocky areas and sandy areas, you can enjoy an accessible underwater world, perfect for both beginners and those seeking direct contact with the ocean.
