Titolo 4

Barranquismo Barranco San Joaquín

Fasnia

The San Joaquín Ravine, located in the municipality of Fasnia, is one of the most iconic dry canyoneering routes in southern Tenerife. Unlike the wet descents of the north, this experience takes place in an arid, luminous volcanic environment, where the wind and sun have shaped the rock for centuries, leaving behind a landscape of contrasts and textures.

The route begins in the municipality's midlands and descends to lower areas, traversing sections where the ravine narrows to form authentic natural canyons. Along the way, canyoners face a succession of rappels of between 10 and 30 meters, technical descents, and passages where a rope is essential. The eroded stones, the play of light between the reddish walls, and the remains of ancient waterways create a special, almost lunar atmosphere, which distinguishes this descent from any other on the island.

The difficulty is medium-high, and although the flow is not constant, water can form in some places after rain, adding excitement and beauty to the route. It is recommended to do it with local guides or in experienced groups, as orientation in the area and terrain conditions can change rapidly.

The San Joaquín Ravine stands out not only for its sporting component but also for its scenic and geological value. From its highest reaches, there are spectacular views of the Fasnia Valley and the Atlantic Ocean, and on clear days, you can even make out the silhouette of Gran Canaria in the background.

It is an ideal descent for those seeking a more technical, solitary experience that connects with the volcanic landscape of the south. The silence, the warmth of the sun reflecting on the rocks, and the sense of immensity accompany the entire route, making canyoning in San Joaquín an adventure as demanding as it is unforgettable.

Iglesia Vieja de Fasnia

The Old Church of Fasnia is a minimalist ruin of the former Hermitage of San Joaquín, built in the 17th century. Today, all that remains is a semicircular arch on a couple of walls, but it stands high on a hill overlooking the ravine and the rural landscape. Surrounded by silence and nature, it is a peaceful and charming place to escape for a few minutes.
