La Cueva Caprichosa

Barranco Grande

Must-try dishes
Grilled meat
Eggplant toasts with cheese
Ropa Vieja

When I step into La Cueva Caprichosa, the first thing I notice is that I'm not in just any restaurant. The place is set inside a natural cave, with volcanic rock walls enveloping the entire space and creating a very special, almost refuge-like atmosphere. This setting already shapes the experience: here you come to sit down without rushing and enjoy both the ambiance and the food.

The menu revolves around Canarian cuisine and grilled meats. It's a place designed for eating well and leaving satisfied, with generous portions and familiar dishes. The menu features classics like wrinkled potatoes with mojo sauce, grilled cheese, potato salad, and mushrooms, alongside meats such as Iberian pork shoulder, ribs, chops, and T-bone steaks, all grilled to perfection. They focus on flavor, perfect doneness, and honest portions.

The space is ample and divided into several areas within the cave itself, which means that even when full, it doesn't feel cramped. Outside, there's private grounds and parking, which makes visiting much easier. The atmosphere is usually lively, with large tables, groups, and families, and that constant aroma of grilled food that accompanies all the dishes.

The service is friendly and direct, without excessive formality, in keeping with the type of restaurant it is. La Cueva Caprichosa works especially well when you're craving something different from the usual, without straying from familiar cuisine. For me, it's a place you go more for the complete experience—the location, the food, and the ambiance—than for a specific dish, and that's precisely what makes it special.

Where to eat

Lucky Helado

If you're in downtown Santa Cruz and fancy something cold while strolling around Plaza de España, Lucky Helado is a very convenient option. It's a takeaway shop with a variety of ice creams and fast service, ideal for a quick stop before continuing your walk. Perfect for cooling off without any hassle right in the city center. There are often queues.

What to see

Presa de los Campitos

If you're looking for a peaceful getaway near Santa Cruz with a unique twist, the Los Campitos Dam has something special. It's not just nature: it's an abandoned structure that lends a distinctive character to the surroundings. You can stroll around, explore, and discover the contrast between the natural landscape and what was left unused. It's a little-known spot, perfect for disconnecting and discovering something different without going too far.

Activities

Área Recreativa Llano Los Viejos

If you're looking for a picnic area within Anaga that's more secluded and less crowded than others, Llano de Los Viejos has a very different feel. Here you're immersed in the laurel forest, with frequent mist, humidity, and that typical silence of the northern mountains. It's a more enclosed spot, perfect for relaxing, having a picnic or barbecue, and disconnecting from the hustle and bustle.

Beaches

Playa de la Nea

La Nea Beach in Radazul is a volcanic black sand beach perfect for lingering. It's very close to Santa Cruz, but the atmosphere here is calmer, with a breakwater that softens the waves and a promenade along the entire shore. It's a comfortable beach, well-integrated into the surroundings and very popular with locals.

Nightlife

Lone Star

If you love rock, Lone Star isn't just a cocktail bar: it's one of Santa Cruz's most iconic venues for enjoying great music and an alternative atmosphere. Here, guitars take center stage over current trends. Between concerts, DJ sets, beer, and a decor brimming with vinyl records and musical memorabilia, the bar has become a true meeting point for rock lovers of all generations.

Shopping

Vermut el 18 blanco

If you enjoyed the red Vermouth 18, this white one takes a completely different approach. Everything here is fresher, more citrusy, and lighter, but without sacrificing complexity. You'll notice it from the first sip: herbaceous notes, fruit, and that gentle spiciness that makes it so easy to drink. It's perfect as an aperitif or for something more relaxed. Personally, I prefer red vermouths, but when it comes to the 18, I can't decide which one I like best. They're both incredible.

Sports

Santa Cruz Extreme

The Santa Cruz Extreme is an iconic mountain race in Tenerife, which runs through Anaga Rural Park and finishes in Santa Cruz. It has several categories (60 km, 33 km, 18 km, 10 km, and a vertical race), with steep slopes, routes along trails, and traditional farmhouses. Held in October, it attracts runners of many nationalities; it is also notable for its sustainable approach and for promoting the natural and rural value of Anaga.

Trekking

Sendero Charca de Tahodio

The Charca de Tahodio trail in Santa Cruz de Tenerife is one of the closest routes to the city and, at the same time, one of the quietest. It connects the Valleseco neighborhood with a reservoir surrounded by green mountains, offering an unexpectedly natural landscape just minutes from the urban hustle and bustle. Ideal for a relaxing walk, it combines ocean views, monteverde vegetation, and the calm of the reservoir water.
