Cueva del Santo Hermano Pedro
El Medano

The Cave of Santo Hermano Pedro, located near Tenerife South Airport, is a place steeped in history, spirituality, and popular tradition. Pedro de San José de Betancur, known as Hermano Pedro, found refuge here during his youth, herding cattle in the arid lands of the south of the island. This simple natural shelter has become over time a symbol of faith and Tenerife's main religious pilgrimage site.
The interior of the cave retains a humble and serene atmosphere, decorated with candles, flowers, photographs, and objects left by the faithful as offerings or in gratitude for favors received. The dim lighting and silence of the place invite reflection and contemplation, while the echo of voices mingles with the smell of wax and the constant murmur of visitors.
Every year, especially during the Hermano Pedro pilgrimage—which departs from Vilaflor to the cave—hundreds of pilgrims walk the ancient path he himself used with his flock. It is a tradition that combines religious devotion, historical memory, and contact with the nature of southern Tenerife.
In the surrounding area, a small chapel and rest area have been built, where visitors can stop and learn more about the life of the saint, considered an example of humility and service. Although its origins are simple, Brother Pedro's Cave today represents an important cultural and spiritual meeting point, where religious and human aspects merge in an atmosphere of respect and hope.
