Circular Afur - Taganana

Mazico de Anaga

The Afur – Tamadite Beach – Taganana – Afur circular route is one of the most complete, photogenic, and authentic hikes in the Anaga Mountains. It departs from the small hamlet of Afur, in northern Tenerife, descending through the Afur Ravine, a lush gorge that winds its way through green walls and volcanic rock.

The first section follows the water and immerses you in the typical Monteverde vegetation. After approximately an hour and a half of descent, the trail reaches Tamadite Beach, a wild cove of volcanic rocks where the ocean crashes forcefully. It's not suitable for swimming, but it's ideal for resting and enjoying the unspoiled seascape.

From there, the path continues parallel to the cliffs, following a coastal path that leads to Taganana, with spectacular views of the Atlantic and the rugged profile of Anaga. In Taganana, you can stop at one of its traditional bars to recharge your batteries. The return to Afur is a gradual ascent along a dirt and stone trail, with shaded sections between laurel forest and rural areas.

This route is for those seeking an intense and varied experience, with the contrast between ravine, sea, and forest, in one of the most beautiful and unspoiled areas of Tenerife.

Where to eat

Lucky Helado

If you're in downtown Santa Cruz and fancy something cold while strolling around Plaza de España, Lucky Helado is a very convenient option. It's a takeaway shop with a variety of ice creams and fast service, ideal for a quick stop before continuing your walk. Perfect for cooling off without any hassle right in the city center. There are often queues.

What to see

Cabeza del Tejo

If you love feeling immersed in unspoiled wilderness, this viewpoint in Anaga, Cabezo del Tejo, will leave you speechless. Upon arrival, you'll find yourself literally stepping onto a natural balcony overlooking the north coast of Tenerife. From here, you'll see the Roque de las Ánimas, the cliffs of Benijo and Almáciga, and the entire Atlantic Ocean stretching to the horizon. Surrounded by laurel forest and the mists of the trade winds, it's one of those places where the landscape remains pristine.

Activities

Albergue Comarcal Valle Colino

The Valle Colino Regional Shelter in La Laguna is Tenerife's main shelter for abandoned animals. In addition to caring for and sheltering dogs and cats, it offers the opportunity to volunteer in its daily work: walking animals, helping with cleaning them, or assisting with adoption campaigns. A caring and emotionally rewarding experience for animal lovers.

Beaches

Playa de Benijo

Benijo Beach, in northern Tenerife, is one of those places that seem like something out of this world. Wild, dark, and powerful, it combines volcanic sand with a rough sea and the silhouettes of rocks emerging from the Atlantic. It's ideal for those seeking pure nature, far from mass tourism. The sunset here is one of the most impressive on the island: the sun sets behind the rocks while the sea is tinged with gold and violet.

Nightlife

Urban 180

If you enjoy sipping a drink with city views and continuing the night without leaving one spot, Azotea Urban 180 is one of those rooftop bars I love to visit. Located on the seventh floor of the Hotel Urban Anaga in Santa Cruz, it shows: you get a panoramic view of the city, the sunsets take on a whole new dimension, the music and cocktails liven up the atmosphere, and as night falls, the place transforms into a lively rooftop club with a great vibe and people ready to have a good time.

Shopping

Tiburón Libre

Tiburón Libre, located at 44 Callao de Lima Street (Santa Cruz), is a technical and recreational dive shop that stands out for its extensive catalog of renowned brands such as Aqualung, Suunto, Cressi, Mares, and Suex, its technical service, and its very personal service. Here you can see and touch the equipment, order items they don't have, and get great prices without having to wait for orders. It's ideal for both frequent divers and those looking to get started.

Sports

BMX Parque la Vega

The BMX circuit at Parque de La Vega in La Laguna is one of the most active spaces for freestyle enthusiasts in northern Tenerife. Surrounded by greenery and a youthful atmosphere, it offers a course with ramps, jumps, and modules ideal for practicing technique and style. It's a regular meeting point for local riders who appreciate its relaxed, community-oriented atmosphere, open to all levels.

Trekking

El Tomadero

A circular route in Anaga Rural Park connecting Punta del Hidalgo with El Tomadero, ascending via a channel carved into the rock and descending through the ravine. It's approximately 6 km with little elevation gain, but includes technical and exposed sections that increase the difficulty. The channel is in very good condition and clean, although it can be quite vertigo-inducing in some places. The descent through the ravine is rocky and uncomfortable. A short but demanding route, not recommended for people with vertigo.
