Barranquismo Barranco Hondo
Candelaria

Barranco Hondo, located in the municipality of Candelaria, is one of those corners of Tenerife where nature retains its wild and primitive character. Away from the beaten track, this ravine winds its way through volcanic rock formations and vegetation typical of the south of the island, offering a perfect route for canyoning and exploration enthusiasts.
The descent of Barranco Hondo combines rappels of varying heights, narrow rock passages, and climbing areas, alternating dry sections with small seasonal waterfalls. Its morphology, shaped over centuries by erosion, creates dark walls that contrast with the green tones of the cardons, tabaibas, and verodes that grow between the crevices. During the rainy season, the riverbed can retain moisture, leaving small pools and reflections that amplify the sense of adventure.
On a technical level, the route is considered of medium difficulty, suitable for those with some experience or accompanied by certified guides. The descent requires rope handling and full equipment, but it rewards with exceptional views and a sense of total immersion in nature.
Beyond the sporting aspect, Barranco Hondo has great environmental and cultural value. During the hike, it's easy to imagine how these same natural paths were once traveled by ancient shepherds or the Guanches in their search for water and shelter. The tranquility of the place, interrupted only by the sound of the wind or the echo of the water, makes the experience deeply authentic.
Canyoning in Barranco Hondo is like discovering another side of southern Tenerife: more intimate, rugged, and full of beauty. It is a route that combines the excitement of the sport with the calm of an unspoiled natural environment, ideal for those seeking a direct connection with the island and its volcanic landscapes.
