Corpus Christi

La Orotava

Corpus Christi in La Orotava is not just a religious festival; it's a true work of ephemeral art that transforms the historic center of this beautiful municipality in northern Tenerife into an open-air gallery. The celebration revolves around the floral carpets that residents patiently and proudly create on cobblestone streets and, above all, the impressive carpet of volcanic soil from Mount Teide that covers the entire Town Hall Square. The latter, crafted by expert carpet makers for weeks, is one of the largest of its kind in the world.

The event takes place between late May and mid-June, depending on the liturgical calendar, and attracts both the faithful and art and culture lovers. From early in the morning, an atmosphere of community and devotion permeates the air: entire families work together, each with their own design, creating floral arrangements that combine religious, natural, and traditional motifs. The flowers are carefully selected, petal by petal, and combined with colored soil collected within Teide National Park, making these works something completely local and unique.

The big day culminates with the procession of the Blessed Sacrament through the carpets, a moment of great respect and contemplation. But beyond the religious aspect, what makes Corpus Christi so special in La Orotava is its value as a cultural and artistic expression, the affection of its residents, and the beauty that, although fleeting, remains etched in the memories of those who visit.
