Presa de los Campitos

Santa Cruz de Tenerife

If you're looking for a place near Santa Cruz to disconnect but with a bit more character, the Los Campitos Dam has that unique touch that makes it interesting. It's not just a natural space: it's an old, disused hydraulic structure, and that completely changes the experience when you're there.

The dam, surrounded by vegetation typical of Anaga, retains that air of an abandoned construction that sparks curiosity. You're not in a manicured park or on a typical tourist trail. Here you come to walk, but also to observe how the environment has gradually integrated a structure that never fulfilled its purpose. That contrast between the built environment and nature is what truly gives the place its character.

The paths around it are easy, without any technical difficulty, allowing you to move calmly and explore at your own pace. As you walk, you'll find different angles of the dam, areas to stop, and corners where the passage of time is evident. It's easy to imagine what it once was and understand why today it has become more of a contemplative space than a functional one.

It doesn't have large facilities or services, and that's also part of its identity. It's a more "raw," less polished place, where the experience depends more on your curiosity than on what the place obviously offers.

If you're expecting a spectacular landscape, this might not be the place for you. But if you're drawn to places with a quiet history, somewhat forgotten, and with that air of peaceful exploration, you'll find exactly that here.

Where to eat

Lucky Helado

If you're in downtown Santa Cruz and fancy something cold while strolling around Plaza de España, Lucky Helado is a very convenient option. It's a takeaway shop with a variety of ice creams and fast service, ideal for a quick stop before continuing your walk. Perfect for cooling off without any hassle right in the city center. There are often queues.

What to see

Biblioteca de Arte TEA

If you need a quiet place in the heart of Santa Cruz to stop for a moment, the TEA Art Library is perfect for escaping the city's hustle and bustle. Here you can sit and read, study, or simply spend some time in silence surrounded by books and contemporary architecture. The space is spacious, bright, and very pleasant, ideal for those seeking tranquility, culture, and a different atmosphere within the city.

Activities

Área Recreativa Llano Los Viejos

If you're looking for a picnic area within Anaga that's more secluded and less crowded than others, Llano de Los Viejos has a very different feel. Here you're immersed in the laurel forest, with frequent mist, humidity, and that typical silence of the northern mountains. It's a more enclosed spot, perfect for relaxing, having a picnic or barbecue, and disconnecting from the hustle and bustle.

Beaches

Playa de las Teresitas

Playa de las Teresitas is the main beach of the island's capital. It has white sand and with its palm trees, crystal clear waters and beach bars it is the ideal place to spend a day.

Nightlife

Urban 180

If you enjoy sipping a drink with city views and continuing the night without leaving one spot, Azotea Urban 180 is one of those rooftop bars I love to visit. Located on the seventh floor of the Hotel Urban Anaga in Santa Cruz, it shows: you get a panoramic view of the city, the sunsets take on a whole new dimension, the music and cocktails liven up the atmosphere, and as night falls, the place transforms into a lively rooftop club with a great vibe and people ready to have a good time.

Shopping

Vermut el 18 blanco

If you enjoyed the red Vermouth 18, this white one takes a completely different approach. Everything here is fresher, more citrusy, and lighter, but without sacrificing complexity. You'll notice it from the first sip: herbaceous notes, fruit, and that gentle spiciness that makes it so easy to drink. It's perfect as an aperitif or for something more relaxed. Personally, I prefer red vermouths, but when it comes to the 18, I can't decide which one I like best. They're both incredible.

Sports

Santa Cruz Extreme

The Santa Cruz Extreme is an iconic mountain race in Tenerife, which runs through Anaga Rural Park and finishes in Santa Cruz. It has several categories (60 km, 33 km, 18 km, 10 km, and a vertical race), with steep slopes, routes along trails, and traditional farmhouses. Held in October, it attracts runners of many nationalities; it is also notable for its sustainable approach and for promoting the natural and rural value of Anaga.

Trekking

El Tomadero

A circular route in Anaga Rural Park connecting Punta del Hidalgo with El Tomadero, ascending via a channel carved into the rock and descending through the ravine. It's approximately 6 km with little elevation gain, but includes technical and exposed sections that increase the difficulty. The channel is in very good condition and clean, although it can be quite vertigo-inducing in some places. The descent through the ravine is rocky and uncomfortable. A short but demanding route, not recommended for people with vertigo.
