Museo Etnográfico Juan Ëvora

Parque Nacional del Teide

Visiting the Juan Évora Ethnographic Museum is a glimpse into what life was like at the heights of Mount Teide just a few decades ago, with quiet surroundings, immense views, and living traditions. The museum is located in Boca Tauce, right where the TF-21 and TF-38 highways fork south, in what was the home of shepherd Juan Évora, the last inhabitant of Las Cañadas who lived according to traditional customs. It has been restored to preserve its authenticity: entering it feels like you've stepped back in time.

The space is divided into several small rooms, which recreate different aspects of the shepherds' way of life: where they slept, how they stored food, what tools they used, how they herded their flocks, how they collected milk or made cheese, even how they endured the climatic conditions on the summit. It's not a large museum, but its small scale makes it intimate, accessible, and personal. You might be gazing at a panel, an ancient vessel, a shepherd's hammock, and think that life depended on the climate, the geography, and the daily sweat.

The museum also functions as an information point for those who want to take hiking trails that start there, such as Chavao or Boca Tauce, which is a huge advantage: you arrive, soak up some context about the area, its nature, and the people who lived there, and you can start the hike with a different perspective. It also has an adjacent parking lot, which makes it easy to come by car; but be careful, the parking lot closes at 3:45 PM, just like the museum, so you have to plan your visit well to avoid getting trapped.

Another aspect that sets it apart is its free admission: you don't have to pay, making it accessible to everyone—tourists, locals, or families. And the hours are fixed year-round (9:00 AM–3:45 PM), so you can plan your visit regardless of the season. Furthermore, due to its location on Teide, the surrounding views are spectacular: from the sky, the mountains, the silence... everything adds something more than just old objects; it adds scenery, memory, an emotional landscape.

If you ask me, it's one of the places I most recommend if you're doing nature tourism or hiking on Teide, because it prepares you to better understand the park, its people, its history. It's not a glamorous museum, but it is a truly authentic and powerful one.

What to see

Pino Gordo

Standing before the Pino Gordo in Vilaflor de Chasna is truly awe-inspiring. It's not just big: it's colossal. Standing over 45 meters tall with a trunk so wide it takes several people to encircle it, this Canary Island pine conveys an almost tangible sense of age and resilience. Looking up at it is dizzying and makes you feel small before one of Tenerife's great natural giants.

Activities

Las lajas

If you want the ultimate mountain adventure, the Las Lajas Recreation Area is one of the best spots in Tenerife. Here you can spend the whole day among pine trees, with barbecues, picnic tables, children's play areas, and plenty of space to relax. What's more, it's not just a picnic area: several hiking trails start from here, so you can combine a walk and a barbecue in one day.

At Dulcería Vilaflor, you'll find time-honored recipes, made by hand with natural ingredients. Almond cakes, rosquetes (ring-shaped pastries), and mantecados (shortbread cookies) with that old-fashioned flavor that's hard to find these days. It's a simple, village-style place where you can buy, taste, and quickly understand why they've been in business for so many years.

Sports

Parque de Calistenia

The Calistenia Park of Vilaflor also has many sports areas in Tenerife that can be used for: climbing the mountains and clear air at more than 1,400 meters in altitude. The installation is very easy, with the basics for a good routine of street workout, but the verdadero is attractive in the exercise. Aquí entrenas entre pinares y tranquilidad absolutea, en uno de los pueblos más altos de España y muy lejos del ambience urbano habitualo.

Trekking

Montaña Tejina

If you enjoy less crowded hiking in southern Tenerife, this circular route around Montaña de Tejina is a very complete option. You'll walk approximately 13 km around this large volcanic crag, over a thousand meters high, which was a sacred site and key center of social interaction for the Guanches. The route passes through ravines, ancient threshing floors, small hermitages, and traditional agricultural remains. There's hardly any shade, but in return, you'll have open panoramic views for much of the way and a constant sense of a rural, volcanic, and mystical landscape.
