Bunkers de montaña roja
El Medano

On the coast of El Médano, at the foot of the imposing Montaña Roja, are the old bunkers built as part of the coastal defense system during World War II. These reinforced concrete structures, built out of fear of a possible invasion, were never used in combat, but today they have become a historical testament that astonishes those who visit the area.
The bunkers, most of which are semi-buried and have small strategic openings, contrast with the natural beauty that surrounds them: the intense blue of the ocean, the golden sands of the beach, and the volcanic silhouette of Montaña Roja, declared a Special Nature Reserve. It is precisely this blend of the natural and the historical that makes the place a unique spot, imbued with both memory and tranquility.
Access to them is easy and is part of the most popular hikes that connect El Médano with La Tejita. Along the route, in addition to the military remains, you can observe protected birds, native flora, and spectacular views of the Atlantic, with the island of Gran Canaria looming on clear days.
Visiting the Montaña Roja Bunkers is not just a historical walk: it also invites you to reflect on how the traces of the past are integrated into a natural space that today is a symbol of peace and outdoor enjoyment. An experience that combines history, hiking, and landscapes in a unique setting in southern Tenerife.
