El Rayo
Buenavista del Norte

The Rayo de Buenavista del Norte is one of those places that seem hidden until you find it: a large natural hollow in the coastal terrain, adjacent to the Punta de Buenavista Lighthouse, which opens to the sea forming an impressive arch. It can be interpreted as the collapse of a volcanic cave, although popular legend says it was caused by lightning, hence its name. This blend of myth and geology gives it a special charm.
The setting is rugged and magnificent: black volcanic rocks, coastal pools with crystal-clear water, intense views of the ocean, and a contrast between lava, sea, and vegetation. The nearby natural pools ("charcos") allow for swimming if conditions permit, transforming the visit into an experience of direct contact with the sea.
Access is not complicated: you can walk from the lighthouse, following a short path along the coast; It's also possible to drive to the nearest spot and then hike the trail. There are no large facilities or luxurious services, so it's a good idea to bring the essentials: water, comfortable shoes, and sunscreen.
Visiting El Rayo isn't just about seeing a geological curiosity; it's about stopping, breathing, gazing at the sea, and experiencing the vastness of Tenerife's north coast. Simple activities like swimming in the pools, exploring the soil formation, taking photos at sunset, and discussing local legends become memorable moments. Visiting places like this often doesn't appear on the most touristic itineraries, but it's one of those that leaves a lasting impression: being in contact with something natural, wild, small-medium, and being part of a community that cares for these corners makes the visit truly rewarding.
