Pico Viejo
Parque nacional del Teide
Titolo 4

The circular route to Pico Viejo is one of the most spectacular hikes in Teide National Park, ideal for those looking to enjoy the volcanic landscapes without climbing Mount Teide itself. It starts from the Boca Tauce viewpoint, at an altitude of approximately 2,100 m, and delves into solidified lava, scoria, and arid landscapes that seem like something out of this world.
The well-marked and physically demanding trail gradually ascends along Trail 9 (Teide–Pico Viejo) to reach the summit of Pico Viejo, at 3,135 meters. This volcano is the second highest in the Canary Islands and stands out for its crater, over 800 meters in diameter, one of the largest in the archipelago. The views from the summit are breathtaking: Mount Teide towers to the east, while the islands of La Gomera can be seen to the west, and even El Hierro and La Palma on clear days.
After reaching the summit, you can complete the route by returning via Trail 28 (the Narices of Teide), or by connecting with sections of Trail 23 or intermediate paths that descend through the volcano's scoria. The landscape changes between dark lava flows, capricious lava formations, and badlands.
Recommendations for the route:
This is a high-mountain route with significant elevation gains (more than 1,000 m total elevation gain).
It requires good physical fitness and familiarity with walking on loose volcanic terrain.
Bring plenty of water, sunscreen, a hat, and energy-boosting food.
Suitable hiking shoes, preferably with stiff soles.
Layered clothing: it may be hot at the beginning, but cold and windy at the summit.
No permit is required to access the Pico Viejo crater.
The entire route can take between 6 and 8 hours depending on pace and conditions.
It's a perfect alternative to Mount Teide if you're looking for less crowded views and equally stunning landscapes, with the advantage that it doesn't require a special permit. The Pico Viejo crater, surrounded by dark reddish hues, is one of the most photogenic and rarely visited spots at this altitude in Tenerife.
