📋No permits required
Leave El Médano eager to get moving, and soon you're walking along the trail that runs along the base of Montaña Roja, that 171-meter volcanic cone that rises majestically beside the sea. The route is a gentle loop—approximately 4.7 to 5 km—that combines sea, red rock, dunes, and natural viewpoints, without any difficult climbing.
What's most striking is how the surroundings change with every step: you start at sea level, skirting the coast of El Médano, with views of the promenade and the wind that fills the kitesurfers' sails. Then the path approaches the mountain, where the sand turns reddish and you see eroded volcanic formations, a color that's hard to find on other beaches. On the gentle climb to the summit of Montaña Roja, the view opens up: on one side, the endless blue of the Atlantic; on the other, the coastal plain and the island silhouettes in the distance.
The route is accessible: you don't need special equipment, just good footwear, water, sun protection, and a desire to enjoy yourself. It's not a high-mountain route, but rather a walk immersed in nature, ideal for families or those not seeking an extreme challenge. Furthermore, being a circular route, you start and finish in El Médano, making it easy to combine with a day at the beach or a meal near the town. The trail is well-marked and easy to follow.
The natural environment is its main attraction: Montaña Roja is part of a Special Nature Reserve of approximately 166 hectares, where vegetation adapted to the wind and scarce water blends with volcanic formations. Don't expect abundant shade here: the sun and wind dominate, so it's best to be well-prepared.
For me, what makes this route stand out is the combination of proximity (you're in the south of Tenerife, easily accessible) with spectacular scenery (that volcano, the sea, the contrasting colors). If you're looking for a hike that doesn't take all day, includes beautiful views, and leaves you wanting another swim or a sunset on the beach, this is a sure bet. You'll love it if you want to feel close to nature, walk in the fresh air, and see Tenerife from a different perspective, with the wind, volcanic rock, and coastal panorama.

Where to eat
La Milonguita
La Milonguita is an artisan bakery in El Médano with a Río de la Plata flavor: breads, croissants, alfajores, tarts, and typical sweets from Argentina and Uruguay. A place to have breakfast with mate or an afternoon snack with traditional flavors, in a very welcoming and authentic atmosphere.
What to see
Cueva del Santo Hermano Pedro
The Cave of Santo Hermano Pedro, in the municipality of Granadilla de Abona, is one of Tenerife's most important pilgrimage sites. The refuge of the first Canarian saint during his youth as a shepherd, the place maintains an atmosphere of contemplation and faith. Today, thousands of people visit it each year to leave offerings, light candles, and ask favors of the saint, making it a place of deep popular devotion.
Activities
Avistamiento de Aves en Montaña Roja
The Montaña Roja Special Nature Reserve, in El Médano, is one of the best places in southern Tenerife for birdwatching. Its semi-arid environment, salt marshes, and coastal areas provide refuge and resting places for numerous migratory species. Kentish plovers, herons, curlews, and sandpipers are common, as well as resident birds such as the trumpeter finch and the stone curlew. It's an ideal place to observe winged wildlife in peace and tranquility.
