Titolo 4
Área Recreativa de Chanajiga
Los Realejos

The Chanajiga Recreation Area doesn't feel like a simple picnic spot. When you arrive, you have the feeling of entering a much deeper and wilder mountain region. It's located in the upper midlands of Los Realejos, very close to some of the most spectacular forest areas in the north, and that completely shapes the atmosphere of the place.
Here, the landscape changes rapidly compared to other, more open recreational areas. The forest is dense, with large pine groves mixed with lush vegetation and a frequent presence of fog and low clouds. The air is usually cool even when it's hot below, and the scent of damp pine and wet earth is ever-present for most of the year.
The recreation area is equipped for a comfortable day out. It has wooden tables, barbecues, ample areas to gather, and enough space for groups without feeling overcrowded. But what truly sets Chanajiga apart is the natural environment that surrounds it. Many people don't come here just to eat: they come to hike, explore, or use the area as a base before venturing onto longer trails.
From this area, several well-known routes in northern Tenerife begin, some connecting with trails that descend to the Barranco de Ruiz ravine or ascend to higher elevations. This creates a curious mix of atmosphere, with families spending the day and hikers preparing for more challenging treks.
Another distinctive feature is the sound of the place. Between the wind rustling through the pines, the dampness of the forest, and the general silence, Chanajiga has a much more immersive atmosphere than other, more urban or crowded recreational areas.
Here, your plans often stretch out without you even realizing it: a barbecue, a coffee, a short walk, sitting down again… all with that feeling of being quite far from the noise of the coast, even though you're not actually that far away. If you're looking for true nature and a mountain with a strong character, Chanajiga is one of the places that best represents the forested north of Tenerife.

Where to eat
Porsabor
If you love ice cream, you'll notice the difference from the very first spoonful. At Porsabor, they work with a carefully crafted base, intense flavors, and a creamy texture that's not your average drink. They have a wide variety, including more unusual flavors and lactose-free or sugar-free options. It's the kind of place where you stop for an ice cream and end up going back for more.
What to see
Minas de San José
When you arrive at the San José Mines, you feel like you've landed on another planet. The reddish soil, ochre tones, and volcanic formations create an almost Martian landscape that changes with the light every minute. It's one of those places near Mount Teide where you'll find yourself stopping to take photos without even realizing it, but beyond the striking image, you also perceive the geological force that defines this part of the island.
Activities
Área Recreativa El Lagar
If you're looking for a mountain getaway in the north, El Lagar Recreation Area offers a very different atmosphere: wetter, greener, and much more peaceful. Here, you're surrounded by pine forest with undergrowth, and picnic tables and barbecues are well integrated into the environment. It's a comfortable place to spend a relaxing day, have a picnic or barbecue, and unwind in a cooler, more natural setting.
Beaches
Charco de La Laja
Charco de La Laja, in San Juan de la Rambla, is one of the most spectacular natural pools in northern Tenerife. Carved by lava and protected from the waves by rock formations, it offers crystal-clear turquoise waters and a stunning volcanic setting. It's perfect for a peaceful swim, unwinding, and enjoying the coastal scenery, though always be cautious when swimming in the open sea.
Nightlife
Shopping
Las Llanadas
If you enjoy discovering local products directly from their source, this small artisanal cheese factory in Los Realejos is one of those places where cheese is still made the traditional way. They work primarily with goat's milk and produce fresh, semi-cured, and smoked cheeses, as well as ricotta and other dairy products. It's a place closely linked to the primary sector of northern Tenerife, where the authentic flavor of Canarian cheese takes center stage.
Sports
Parque Sostenible de Los Trazos
The Los Trazos Sustainable Park in La Orotava is not your typical flat, grassy urban park. Here, everything revolves around sustainability and the island's natural landscape. It features sloping paths, viewpoints, sports areas, calisthenics equipment, and gardens with native Canarian flora. It's a very pleasant place to walk, sit for a while, or simply unwind, all within one of La Orotava's most peaceful residential areas.
Trekking
Sendero de Los Organos
The Los Órganos Trail, in the Corona Forestal Natural Park, is one of the most iconic routes in La Orotava. It passes through a thick, beautiful pine forest to reach the impressive basalt cliffs reminiscent of organ pipes, formed by volcanic action. With views of the Orotava Valley and Mount Teide, it is an ideal hike for nature lovers and those who enjoy peaceful hiking.
